Radio Communications

One of the more common problems that may be encountered when using robotics is the loss of radio communications. There may be any number of things that can cause this loss of communication, including poor connections, incompatible settings, and radio interference on the current channel. Initially, double check that all connections are secure and cables are in good repair. Confirm that the baud and parity are set the same, and that the radio channels are correct. Lastly, try changing the channels to see if external interference is affecting the strength of the signal.

One indicator that may provide some clue as to what could be affecting the radio communications is the Radio Status Indicator, or RSI. This indicator shows the current radio status based on packets received and dropped. If the RSI indicates 0, more than likely there are some problems with the hardware or the communication settings. If there is some value greater than 0, more than likely there is radio interference. Generally, the link status should be at or close to 100% at all times. If interference is evident, change radio channels.
