Instructions to Upgrade from Survey Pro 1.x/2.x to Survey Pro 3.x on the Ranger CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION
It is a chargeable upgrade to move from Survey Pro 1.x or 2.x for Windows CE
to Survey Pro 3.x for Windows CE. The upgrade price is U.S. $495. If you install a
3.x version to your data collector, and do not purchase an upgrade key, your data collector will be
limited to 25 points. The upgrade key will update and unlock all your registered
modules (Standard, Pro, Robotics, GPS or Max).
Furthermore, Survey Pro 3.x is only compatible with Windows CE 3.0, which you will need to
download and install before you proceed to upgrade to Survey Pro 3.0 software.
The upgrade to Survey Pro 3.x is not available for the Ranger 133R due to the requirements
for RAM and Flash Disk space to run version 3.x. TDS will continue to support and maintain Survey Pro
2.x, but we will not be adding new features.
The purpose of this Update program is to provide the latest version of the Survey Pro software for a
Ranger unit that contains an older version of the same software or needs to fully reinstall the software.
Using SetupTDS.exe to Setup Survey Pro on the Ranger
Upgrading Survey Pro 1.x and 2.x to Survey Pro 3.x
Please read review this entire document before attempting to upgrade your Ranger!
The routine to upgrade from Survey Pro on the Ranger version 1.x and 2.x series to the
version 3.x series is a two-step process. First, the Windows CE operating system must be upgraded. Second, the
TDS Survey Pro software is then upgraded.
Please note: This is a chargeable upgrade. After installing the software you will
be prompted for two authorization codes, one for the Microsoft Windows® CE 3.0 operating system and
one for Survey Pro 3.x for Windows CE. You can get these codes by contacting our Sales department at
541-753-9322.
Ranger requirements:
- OS rev: version 1.2.1 or greater installed.
To determine the OS rev: version, select the System icon in the control panel. If the OS rev:
release on the Ranger is prior to 1.2.1, please contact
handhelds@tdsway.com for specific instructions prior to running the Windows CE 3.0 upgrade.
- Survey Pro 1.x or 2.x installed with registered modules. All modules that are currently
licensed in Survey Pro for Windows CE will retain their activation after upgrading.
Note: The upgrade to Survey Pro 3.1 is not available for the Ranger 133R due to RAM and Flash
Disk space requirements. TDS will continue to support and maintain Survey Pro 2.x, but we will not be
adding any new features.
1) Read through these instructions.
2) Download the following files
a) Download ActiveSync 3.1 and save to a known location. Previous Ranger
users may already have this installed.
b) Download the Survey Pro 3.x for Windows CE 3.0 upgrade, SetupTDS.exe,
and save to a known location.
c) Download the Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 & Ranger Firmware 2.1
upgrade, update-tds-21.exe and save to a known location.
d) Please note: The software download web page will also
provide you the option to download both the Survey Pro upgrade file
and Windows CE upgrade file in one self-extracting zip file, SPCE31WinCE30Upgrade.exe,
for your convenience. The file size of the zip file is 8.3 megabytes.
2) Update the Operating System from 2.x to 3.0
a) If you have not already done so, install ActiveSync 3.1 on your desktop computer.
b) Connect the Ranger to your desktop computer through ActiveSync and the provided null modem cable. Set up a partnership for future use and to enable the 200T models to communicate through ActiveSync.
c) Explore the Ranger from the desktop computer via ActiveSync.
d) Drag and copy the Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 upgrade update-tds-21.exe from the desktop computer into the \Disk directory on the Ranger.
e) Disconnect the transfer cable from the Ranger.
f) Important: Connect the Ranger to the AC adapter provided with the unit.
g) On the Ranger, locate the Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 upgrade update-tds-21.exe in the \Disk directory. Double-tap the file to execute and install the upgrade. The Ranger will automatically reboot.
h) Upon restarting, a dialogue box will prompt for the authorization code. At this time, please call TDS sales at 541-753-9322 to receive the upgrade codes for both the Windows CE 3.0 upgrade and Survey Pro 3.0.
3) Upgrade the TDS Survey Pro software
a) Connect the Ranger to your desktop computer through ActiveSync with
the provided null modem cable.
b) Explore the Ranger from the local computer via ActiveSync.
c) Drag and copy the Survey Pro 3.1 upgrade file SetupTDS.exe
from the desktop computer into the \Disk directory on the Ranger.
d) Disconnect the Ranger from ActiveSync.
e) On the Ranger, locate the Survey Pro 3.1 upgrade file SetupTDS.exe
on in the \Disk directory. Double-tap the file to execute and install
the upgrade.
f) Double-tap the Survey Pro 3.1 icon on the desktop.
g) When prompted, enter the authorization code for Survey Pro.
