TDS Recon Handheld Computers Help Ensure Food Safety at Claim Jumper Restaurants
Recons with specialized software save time, eliminate paperwork for HACCP food safety
inspections
CORVALLIS, Ore.—October 18, 2005—Tripod Data SystemsTM (TDS) today announced
that Claim Jumper Restaurants have chosen the TDS Recon® rugged handheld computer
for food safety inspections. Equipped with iQuality food inspection software that
was developed by IQ Scientific Instruments, the Recons are helping the restaurants
save time and eliminate paperwork while meeting Hazard Analysis and Critical Control
Point (HACCP) food safety standards.
All Claim Jumper restaurants in the Western U.S. will be equipped with a Recon,
iQuality software, a temperature probe that connects directly into the Recon and
metal tags located next to each inspection point. Operators must touch the tag to
access the checklist for each location; doing so verifies that operators are where
they’re supposed to be when performing checks.
"We wanted to improve our food safety processes for multiple reasons, and we achieved
all of our objectives with the TDS Recon and iQuality system,” said Claim Jumper
Vice President Dan Smith. "First, of course, our guests expect and deserve safe,
high-quality food preparation. Second, it makes good business sense. We’re spending
less time performing inspections, yet collecting more data that is much more readily
available. That helps us improve processes in the kitchen. We’re also able to take
corrective actions before reaching critical limits, so food isn’t wasted.”
The Recon is Web-enabled, allowing operators to download the most current HACCP
data, along with process rules, checklists, food items, equipment lists, critical
limits and corrective actions before beginning an inspection. The software triggers
flashing and audible alarms on the Recon to alert operators when it’s time to perform
checks. Operators complete checklists using the Recon’s touchscreen display and
take corrective actions as directed by pop-up screens. At the end of the day, operators
upload inspection data to a central database, allowing Claim Jumper managers to
review inspection reports anywhere they have Web access.
Although the iQuality system can run on any Windows Mobile handheld computer, IQ
Scientific offers the Recon as part of a bundled package. "The Recon’s ruggedness
makes it an important and reliable part of the iQuality system,” said IQ Scientific
President Malcolm Mitchell. "Restaurant kitchens are usually hot, and in a fast-moving
environment, things are regularly dropped. We’re confident the Recon can handle
whatever restaurants dish out.”
IQ Scientific Instruments is a leader in Laboratory Instrumentation and Electronic
