Corvallis, Ore.—May 17, 2004—Tripod Data Systems (TDS) today announced a $200 price reduction for both models of its rugged TDS ReconTM handheld computer. New prices for the Recon, which comes equipped with Windows MobileTM 2003 software for Pocket PCs, are $1,299 and $1,599.
"Recon sales have been increasing as people discover what a well-built and flexible device it is, and Windows Mobile makes it compatible with programs they're already using," said Dale Kyle, rugged handheld products manager. "This price reduction will allow more people to take advantage of the Recon's unique features."
The Recon is designed for all-day operation in extreme outdoor and industrial environments. It meets MIL-STD-810F military standards for drops, vibration and temperature extremes. It also has an IP67 rating, meaning it's impervious to water and dust.
The Recon's rugged construction makes it ideal for public safety, field service, utilities, military and other outdoor or service-related applications. It weighs just 17 ounces, and its rounded edges provide a comfortable grip. Large, widely spaced buttons are easy to use, and its reflective color TFT display is bright and clear in sunlight.
The Recon comes with a 200 or 400 MHz Intel XScale processor, 64 MB of SDRAM and up to 128 MB of internal nonvolatile Flash storage. It also features two CompactFlash slots, plus a standard 9-pin serial port and a high-speed USB port for connecting to a PC. The standard PowerBoot ModuleTM features a 15-hour rechargeable NiMH battery. Two optional modules add even more versatility: The Extended CF-CapTM provides room for large CompactFlash cards such as GPS, LAN and wireless modems. The AA PowerBoot ModuleTM can run the Recon for eight to 16 hours on two AA alkaline or lithium batteries.
The Recon is available from TDS and TDS-authorized dealers, as well as online at Mobile Planet: www.mobileplanet.com. The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Recon 200 with a 200 MHz processor and 64 MB of nonvolatile Flash storage is now $1,299. The MSRP for the Recon 400, which features a 400 MHz processor and 128 MB of Flash storage, is now $1,599. Both Recon models are available in gray or high-visibility yellow.
