CORVALLIS, Ore.—November 9, 2004—Tripod Data Systems™ (TDS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB), announced today that it will offer its Recon™ rugged handheld computer with a German-language version of the Microsoft® Windows Mobile™ operating system. It will be available through Handheld AB, TDS' master distributor in Europe.
The German-language version of the Recon follows the recent introduction of Recons running Windows Mobile in Japanese and Chinese. The new models offer international users all the capabilities of the rugged Recon, which includes TDS software plus Pocket PC versions of popular applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook® and Internet Explorer—all in a user's native language. Users can also add GPS, Bluetooth and a number of other peripherals without compromising the Recon's durability.
"After ruggedness, the most popular features of the Recon are its ease of use and versatility," said Dale Kyle, rugged handhelds product manager. "And, of course, the easiest way to use it is in a person's native language."
The Recon is designed for all-day operation in extreme outdoor and industrial environments. It meets MIL-STD-810F military standards for drops, vibration and temperature extremes. It also has an IP67 rating, meaning it's impervious to water and dust.
The Recon's rugged construction makes it ideal for public safety, field service, utility, military and other outdoor or service-related applications. It weighs just 17 ounces, and its rounded edges provide a comfortable grip. Large, widely spaced buttons are easy to use, and its reflective color TFT display is bright and clear in sunlight.
The Recon comes with a 200- or 400-MHz Intel XScale processor, 64 MB of SDRAM and up to 128 MB of internal nonvolatile Flash storage. It also features two CompactFlash slots, plus a standard 9-pin serial port and a high-speed USB port for connecting to a PC. The standard PowerBoot Module™ features a 15-hour rechargeable NiMH battery. An optional Extended CF-Cap™ provides room for large CompactFlash cards such as GPS, LAN and wireless modems. Also optional is an AA PowerBoot Module™ that can run the Recon for eight to 16 hours on two AA alkaline or lithium batteries.
