Corvallis, Ore.—October 17, 2003—Tripod Data Systems (TDS) today announced Survey ProTM 3.8, the latest version of its best-selling surveying software, and the new TDS ReconTM rugged handheld data collector running Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PCs.

Survey Pro 3.8 is designed to support the new Recon's Pocket PC functionality. It also adds GPS remote elevation and support for the new Trimble R7 and Trimble R8 GPS receivers. Registered Survey Pro users can download the updated software at www.tdsway.com.

The addition of Windows Mobile 2003 software to the Recon brings the most popular handheld applications to land surveyors and others working in extreme temperatures, driving rain, dusty job sites and other harsh environments.

"Survey Pro 3.8 and the Recon with Windows Mobile 2003 bring together surveyors' number one software choice, an extremely rugged hardware platform and the premier operating system for handheld computers," said Bill Martin, TDS director of marketing. "And Survey Pro's additions are targeted directly at customer requests and features that will enhance productivity."

About Survey Pro 3.8

Survey Pro 3.8 includes a new GPS remote elevation routine that occupies a vertical benchmark with the rover. Applying the results of the occupation updates the base point elevation and creates a new one-point vertical localization without having to enter the localization routine. The horizontal localization remains unchanged. Although this routine was included in previous Survey Pro versions, it has been updated and revised to work with the current workflow in Survey Pro GPS routines.

Other enhancements to Survey Pro 3.8 include:

  • The vertical angle offset feature allows users to take multiple vertical angle measurements with only one shot to the prism. This makes data collection faster and easier when shooting vertical offset points such as power line components.
  • It supports post-processing data logging from the Trimble 5700 RTK GPS receiver to the data collector. Users can save post-process GPS data to either the GPS receiver's internal memory or to the data collector, depending on their job requirements.
  • Offset cut sheet data is written to the RAW data when using the Stake DTM routine with a centerline.
  • NEZ values are written with an accuracy of six decimal places—an increase from four decimal places—when exporting coordinates to an ASCII text file.
  • It has improved user interface responsiveness when staking very long alignments.

Survey Pro 3.8 is available for the Recon, the TDS RangerTM and the HP iPAQ.

About TDS Recon

The Recon is designed for all-day operation in extreme outdoor and industrial environments. It exceeds the MIL-STD-810F military standard for drops, vibration and temperature extremes. It also comes with an IP67 rating, meaning it's impenetrable to water immersion and dust.

The Recon's rugged construction makes it ideal for land surveying, mapping, civil engineering and construction, forestry, utility, facilities and asset management, machine control, law enforcement and military applications. It weighs just 17 ounces, and its rounded edges provide a comfortable grip. Large, widely spaced buttons are easy to use, and its reflective color TFT display is bright and clear in sunlight.

The Recon comes with a 200- or 400-MHz Intel XScale processor, 64 MB of SDRAM and up to 128 MB of internal nonvolatile Flash storage. It also features two CompactFlash slots, plus a standard 9-pin serial port and a high-speed USB port for connecting to a PC. The standard PowerBoot ModuleTM features a 15-hour rechargeable NiMH battery.
