Corvallis, Ore.—July 1, 2003—Tripod Data Systems (TDS) today introduced an improved line of RangerTM rugged handheld computers. The new Rangers are available with up to 512 MB of nonvolatile Flash® memory, work in extremely cold temperatures down to -13° F (-25 C) and feature a color screen.
"TDS has made today’s Ranger even better thanks to continuous improvement and feedback from our users," said Bill Martin, TDS director of marketing. "Customers told us they wanted more memory to handle bigger jobs. Others told us about working in extreme cold on dark winter days. So we increased the Ranger’s operating temperature range and improved the backlight so users can leave it on while working in freezing temperatures."
With up to 512 MB of internal Flash storage available, the new Ranger allows users to store more points and handle larger, more complex jobs. Files are saved to nonvolatile Flash memory, so users don’t have to worry about losing their data.
TDS has also improved the Ranger’s reliability using metric analysis in manufacturing and Pareto-driven issue resolution to prioritize problem areas and process improvements. As before, the Ranger is extremely rugged, with a lightweight carbon fiber and polyurethane exterior to withstand tough field conditions. It exceeds the MIL-STD-810E standard for drop test, shock and vibration and IP67 for protection against dust and water.
The new Ranger is available with 32, 128 or 512 MB of nonvolatile Flash memory. Every Ranger features a 206 MHz Intel® StrongARM® processor, a 320 x 240 backlit reflective color display, 64 MB of SDRAM and a 57-key tactile-action keyboard with separate navigation and alphanumeric keypads plus touch-screen input. The Ranger uses Microsoft® Windows® CE .NET.
Tripod Data Systems (TDS) designs and manufactures rugged Windows CE handheld computers specifically designed for extreme outdoor and industrial environments in the land surveying, mapping, forestry, utility, machine control, public safety and military markets. The rugged TDS Ranger handheld computer was the first Windows CE device to meet military specifications for drop, vibration, immersion, and both high- and low-temperature operation.
