CORVALLIS, OREGON—March 8, 1999—TDS has added the ability to read and write TDS coordinate files (CR5 files) to its SOLO GPS/GIS mapping software for DOS handheld computers. This integration means that users of both SOLO and TDS survey data collection software can now perform surveying calculations on data collected with SOLO without returning to the office. Users can also generate new coordinates with their TDS survey software and then use SOLO to navigate to the positions in the field.

In addition to the CR5 read/write capability, TDS has added localization and navigate-along-a-line functions to SOLO for DOS handheld computers.

The localization function enables users to convert latitude, longitude and altitude information collected by the GPS system to any local coordinate system. This means users can use the new CR5 read/write capability in an existing coordinate system—a significant advance for users not tied into the state plane or universal transverse mercator systems.

The new navigation function enables users to navigate along a line after defining it using stored positions, waypoints or manually entered coordinates; or by specifying a starting position, direction and distance. During navigation, SOLO continuously updates and displays the distance from the line as well as the distance traveled and the distance to the destination. For more complex operations, the user may specify an interval along the line at which to make periodic stops. As the user approaches each interval break, SOLO alerts him or her. This function is ideal for rough staking of boundaries or road sections as well as for finding section corners and other markers.

Price and Availability
SOLO is available now. The cost for software only is $1,500. Bundle pricing is available for systems that include software, handheld computer, GPS receiver and Coast Guard Beacon or DGPS subscription service. Alternative bundles are available for Ashtech users who want to incorporate SOLO into their surveying-grade GPS system for a real-time GIS mapping solution.
