Mobile computing products for extreme environments
Tripod Data Systems (TDS) designs and manufactures hardware and software for mobile computing applications. TDS handheld computers are designed for extreme outdoor and industrial environments. TDS software—used for land surveying, construction and GIS/GPS applications—operates on platforms ranging from programmable calculators to advanced rugged field computers and office PCs.

TDS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB). The company is headquartered in Corvallis, Ore., and was founded in 1987.

Major markets
TDS products are designed for outdoor and industrial use in markets including surveying and mapping, public safety, field service, construction, utilities, forestry, military and law enforcement.

Distribution
TDS products are sold by a direct sales force and a dealer network, and through Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

Products: mobile computing hardware
TDS rugged handheld computers—the Nomad, Recon and the Ranger—meet military specifications for drops, immersion, vibration and temperature extremes. Designed for use in military, public safety, land surveying, forestry and any environment that requires rugged, portable computers, TDS handhelds feature advanced processors for high performance with long battery life.

The Nomad, Recon and Ranger offer capabilities suited to a variety of applications and environments. The Nomad runs Windows Mobile 6 and has an 806 MHz processor. The Recon runs Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and includes a color touchscreen display, while the Ranger runs the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and features a 53-key tactile keypad plus 8+1 directional key and touchscreen for input.

Products: mobile computing software
TDS offers a range of data collection and GPS/GIS software developed specifically for the Recon and Ranger handhelds, along with companion products for Windows PCs. These include:

  • Survey Pro data collection and field computation software aids surveyors through traverse, sideshot, coordinate geometry, staking and adjustment routines. According to independent studies, more surveyors use Survey Pro than all other data collection software combined.
  • SOLO Field GIS mapping software helps users map points, lines and areas; enter GIS data; calculate distances and areas; and view basemaps and field data.
  • SOLO Office for Windows allows users to extract SHP files; prepare images; create custom coordinate systems; and print, plot and customize data output.
  • ForeSight provides powerful, easy-to-use office software tools that help users analyze, adjust and plot their field data.
  • ForeSight DXM (Data eXchange Manager) gives you better ways to view, manage and analyze your survey data.
